Hidden Agenda of IP telephony
With the use of Internet telephony beginning to accelerate as more consumers are enticed by attractive savings offered by Voice Over Internet Protocol (VoIP) should the public hold back any longer or simply dive-in and grab one of the now many VoIP packages on offer? First and foremost it might be worthwhile taking a look at what is happening across the communications industry in order to assess when the time will be right to move away from standard telephony to VoIP. It is also worthwhile recognizing that VoIP is the telephone communications architecture that will ultimately replace standard telephony no matter what else happens.
The Internet itself is not an intelligent entity it is simply a cable architecture that permits digital signals which are able to be translated by smart apparatus living at any connection to the Internet such as computers, web-cams, telephones etc to display the digital transmission in a fashion that reflects the senders intention. Telephone signals almost fit neatly into the virtual world created by the Internet, almost but not quite otherwise we would all be using Internet telephony by now and forgetting standard telephony as a quaint but redundant technology of the last century. This hasn’t happened because IP telephony signals were not originally designed to be fed across the Internet. The Internet was designed to communicate written or graphics data while the notion that it could accommodate voice arrived a little after the Internet began to prove its usefulness.
If one considers that just ten years ago this article would have been considered fanciful. it really does demonstrate just how far the world has come in the communications arena in what is ostensibly a short space of time. If the beginning of the 21st century will be remembered for anything it is probably the advances made with communications technology. Communications technology dwarfs distances between Continents and thereby creates a new virtual landscape in which the global population has access. The fact that today we take for granted that someone in England can purchase an article from a website based in the United States and receive it within a few days is an indication of just how much the world has changed and, importantly highlights the beginnings of the economic scenarios that will soon become a necessary consideration for every country.
It is the economics that has captured the attention of businessmen around the globe because they understand markets. The markets many of them have needed to respond to suddenly look like small pools in a very big pond. The Internet was never engineered to handle a typical telephone call let alone a video phone call although it can and does but only courtesy of the funding of ever improving technology. The hidden agenda in all of this relates to the man made creation designed to elicit significant public demand on a scale only the Internet is able to generate. Communications entrepreneurs possess a dream to create an advanced Internet communications system but in order for this dream to be turned into reality it has been necessary for huge funding to be ploughed into the development of Internet telephony. The only way for this to be achieved was to develop a huge demand for such a mechanism, a demand the size of half the world’s population was sufficient to find the necessary funding and that’s precisely what has occurred. With the necessary funding almost anything can be made possible.
